  • Walker House, arif40uk wrote 16 years ago:
Now it is a worse place to live. A CRACK house operating as a haven for drug dealers and prostitutes has been shut down on a Somers Town council estate. The flat in Walker House in Phoenix Road – bought by leaseholder James Reynolds under the right-to-buy scheme – was forfeited after the council presented evidence to the London County Court in Regent’s Park that it was being used as a drugs den. Bailiffs cleared the flat – with a value estimated at around a quarter of a million pounds – on Thursday morning. The court heard evidence from police and council officials of how neighbours had complained that the property was being used for dealing and prostitution.
  • St Mary's tube station (Disused), arif40uk wrote 16 years ago:
I have an interesting map from the 1930s showing 1) St.Mary's station and 2) Whitechapel station layout, clearly showing the District line, (what is now) the East London line, and the St.Mary's curve connection between the two.
  • St. Mary Matfelon Church (Whitechapel), arif40uk wrote 16 years ago:
The name Whitechapel came from the chapel called St Mary Matfelon, which had white walls. This was situated in what is now Altab Ali Park . The chapel was originally built in the 13th century and the last of a series of chapels with this name was so badly damaged in World War 2 that it was pulled down after the war. Its floor plan can be seen in the park as can a few of the graves. Matfelon was the name of the family responsible for the 14th century building. On this section of a map of 1746, the church is to the left of centre. Note the surrounding fields and the windmill which stood between the Bell Foundry and what is now the Mosque. I have added an old picture

I was astonished to know that this chapel is a registered company! No offense but what is this, is this part of business? I am confused!

  • Little Ilford, arif40uk wrote 16 years ago:
Little Ilford was a civil parish in the West Ham Rural Sanitary District in Essex from 1875 to 1886, when it became part the East Ham Urban Sanitary District, and after 1894 the East Ham urban district. It was abolished as a civil parish in 1900, becoming part of the parish of East Ham and from 1915 the County Borough of East Ham.
  • Little Ilford, arif40uk wrote 16 years ago:
Little Ilford and Great Ilford have a common etymology. The name is first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ilefort and means ford over the Hyle; an old name for the River Roding that means "trickling stream".

Yes, it is now Tesco Express, I really did not like to see Tesco here, they are everywhere. Very close to it there are few more. On the other hand their presence also abolished the arrogant behaviour of the local traders and sales-personnel and selling of out of date goods, and as the competition soar customer service is now better then the past in other shops. You must agree with this.
