My mum ran this off licence When it was called "The Imperial Stores" in the early 1970's. I believe a guy called Fred took it over when we moved on

Every four hours?! What crime's are these - litter dropping, dirty looks, walking a dog without a lead? I've lived on the estate for three years and although it's not exactly a charming place - it does have it's fair share of more serious crime, just not that often - I wouldn't say it's a particularly dangerous area. In fact, I love it there! I'll be sorry to move out cos you can bet that the new 'development' will cater for better off Londoners who want to be close to work and the west end, shoving the poorer residents for whom the estate was built further out, cramming them into already overstretched and run down areas.

The London Library has long played a central role in the intellectual life of the nation, serving generations of readers and writers throughout the country - and beyond - This has been achieved by lending material from its remarkable collections, and by providing a rare literary refuge in the heart of the capital. Membership is open to anyone. The Library houses some one million volumes, which are stored on some 15 miles of open-access shelves. These volumes may be freely browsed, and over 97% are available for loan

As a cabby I would often be approached by men wearing a basque (usually under a long coat) I wouldn't need to ask where they were going. The Piccadilly Theatre, home to The Rocky Horror Show

  • Site of Jack The Ripper Murder 5, WikiMapper wrote 17 years ago:
If you want evidence that the murderer knew the area well, then the fourth murder happened in Mitre Square, which was surrounded by a workhouse and 4 empty houses. The Square Mile was so desirable there were hardly any unwanted houses, while the workhouse would have been shut for the night. This was probably the only place where a screaming would go unnoticed. He clearly knew the city well.

  • HM Prison Pentonville, Bakerloo_BadBoy wrote 17 years ago:
I used to work for the company that was responsible for appointing repair contractors at this prison. 90% of the repairs and upgrades that were recommended to make the prison suitable for rats to infest (never mind humans to exist in) were declined by the Prison service. No wonder prisoners re-offend, this place is a s**thole and should be demolished and rebuilt (my bosses recommendation) That said, it is a fascinating building and no doubt served its purpose before prisoners discovered that they had human rights (although not as many as the rats) and started to make formal complaints

  • Ten Bells, bakerloo_badboy (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
this pub used to be called "Jack The Ripper" back in the 1960's after the landlord changed the name to capitalise on the popularity of the "ripper walks" that used to pass through the area. It is widely believed that some of Jack The Rippers victims would have used the Pub, however, as many of his victims were prostitutes it is unlikely that they used this pub for socialising, it was more likely to have been for the purposes of solicitoring business. Because of a vast number of complaints from feminists and public pressure groups, the name was changed back to the Ten Bells

This building also houses the "receiver" for the green laser that is shone from the Royal Observatory along the Meridan line. Look for it at night, it's pretty impressive
