  • Clock tower, Hairy (guest) wrote 13 years ago:
The clock tower was originally on the top of the hospital that used to occupy this site. The remains of the building's portico are also retained as a feature, opposite the clock tower. Local history booklets of Tooting have photos of the hospital from a century ago. Also retained are the gates and walls of the entrances from both Rectory Lane and Church Lane.

I am not sure if Argos took over the whole of the old Woolworth store, I know they are using the High Rd entrance but can anyone confirm that they also use the old entrance from Church Lane

Yes Aldwych stands for Old Trading Town in Saxon language. It is the site of the Anglo Saxon trading town of Lundenwic ("London trading town") during a period in which Lundinium was abandoned.

  • All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Teresa wrote 13 years ago:
When the club was first founded, it was called 'All England Croquet Club'. Tennis was at it's infancy but croquet was very popular. Later lawn tennis started to gain popularity and started to play inside the club. In 1882, croquet was dropped from the name, as tennis had become the main activity of the club. In 1889 it was restored to the club's name for sentimental reasons, and the club's name became The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. No croquet now play inside All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
