it was the local Islington council who acquired the freehold of the wood and then intended to remove all the trees and build a social services hostel instead in the 1970s. The local residents campaign to preserve this green oasis in the middle of dense urban townscape was ultimately successful and thesedays the wood is managed by the council and is open to the public at least every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm.

The wonderful plans that were submitted for the Olympic bid which showed a roof resembling the muscles have now been scaled back, so the proposed stadium looks more like a foil jam tart case.
The top two tiers are temporary and will be removed after the games so it will look even more like a jam tart case afterwards.
