Shame they don't run the campsite any more, I always fancied a weekend there even though I only live 10 minutes away. Noisy on a Sunday morning though with all those hundreds of footballers.

  • Arena Fields, slarti (guest) wrote 18 years ago:
comments and objections. 1. Arena Field. 1. 1. Multi-storey car park at International Broadcasting and media centres. This is a huge building, of great length and of five stories or more. Such a tall building with a huge footprint at the north west corner of site is inappropriate. It will leave as legacy an ugly blot on the landscape dominating the Lea Navigation and residences in Wick Village of the west bank of the Lea Navigation. Such a large car park detracts from the supposed green and sustainability credentials and traffic strategy of the Games. The car park should be re-positioned to go under the centres or on the east side of the centres to offer residents protection from visual intrusion, air and noise pollution. 1. 2. The Loop Road as it runs along Lea Navigation. It will leave as legacy traffic noise and air pollution along the Lea Navigation. It would detract from the open quality and quiet enjoyment of the open recreational space and the local, national and regional cycle and pedestrian paths. The Loop road should be re-positioned to run on the east side of the Broadcasting Centre so walkers, cyclists, local residents and children at Gainsborough School are offered better protection for its noise and air pollution. 1.3. Towpath along Lea Navigation. This is part of several regional and national long distance cycle and pedestrian paths. In Volume 12b section 3.3.36 it is stated that ‘it is not intended to close the towpath’ during construction of the Games. This wording is too weak: it allows the developers to close the towpath while claiming it was not their ‘intention’’ to do so. A planning condition should be to require the path to be kept open for the duration of the construction periods before and after the Games. In the case of closure during the Games, alternative routes are required to be marked out on the ground and clearly signposted. 1.4. Trees between Arena Field and Lea Navigation. Vol 2A 6.3.14. States that ‘where appropriate existing habitats, trees and woodlands are retained, maintained and restored’. We argue that trees, woodland and habitats to be retained should include those between Arena Field and Lea Navigation to provide a buffer zone and provide a continuing habitat for the house sparrows which live in this area.

This is also the site of the Crysta Palace during the Great Exhibition. When the Exhibition closed a majority of the atrifacts were moved to the Victora and Alvert Museum (just to the south, and the building was taken apart and rebuilt in South East London in an area that adopted its name "Crystal Palace"
