  • La Suite West - Hyde Park, wildmark wrote 11 years ago:
Jimi Hendrix's first London home was at the Hyde Park Towers Hotel, a Bayswater hotel which was in a dilapidated state. Jimi Hendrix stayed here for three months upon his arrival in the City and wrote 'Stone Free' and 'Love or Confusion' while staying here.

I believe this used to be a quarry, which then became a 'refuse tip' (landfill). The council arent aware of any specific details other than it was a landfill. The topography suggests it may be between 3 and 10m deep. Does anyone know any details?

Surely the Old Meadonians are based at Duke's Meadows, Chiswick and have nothing to do with Eel Brook Common, Fulham.

  • The Packington Square Estate, ALBERTO (guest) wrote 11 years ago:
I WAS WORKING ON THIS ESTATE FROM START TO FINISH,(1967-1971). IT WAS CONSTRUCTED BY WATES CONSTRUCTION, AND THE CONCRETE SLABS WERE CAST ON SITE IN MOULDS ,CALLED BATTERIES,TO VARIOUS LENGTHS. THEN GENTLY HEATED OVERNIGHT (IN WINTER) TO PREVENT FREEZING. THESE SLABS COULD WEIGH ANYTHING BETWEEN 5 TO 10 TONS. DURING THE CONSTRUCTION THEY WERE LOWERED ONTO SEVERAL 6 INCH STEEL BOLTS AND TIGHTENED WITH MASSIVE SPANNERS,SO IT IS UNLIKELY THEY WOULD HAVE GIVEN WAY IN THE EVENT OF A GAS BLAST. BECAUSE THESE BLOCKS WERE SOLID CONCRETE THEY WOULD HAVE STOOD FOR MANY YEARS, OUTLIVING THE PRESENT BLOCKS THAT HAVE REPLACED THEM.

  • Riverside Lands Playing Fields, Old Meads (guest) wrote 11 years ago:
The fields have been managed and maintained by Old Meadonians FC (formed by ex pupils of Chiswick Grammar School in 1929) since 2001. London Borough of Hounslow Council granted a 20 year rolling management agreement in 2007 incorporating Chiswick Rugby Club. All maintenance work is carried out Monday to Friday and at the weekends over 600 people enjoy the facilities. Football, Rugby, Softball, Frisbee, mini Rugby and "one off" sports related events. This facility is a pre-booked venue and any use does need to be charged. As these are privately managed Sports Fields, in line with local Authority bye laws on Dogs, a total Dog exclusion policy is in force. Access is from two gates. One on the Chertsey Road and one on Dan Mason Drive. These are locked when there is no sporting activity taking place.
